What is volume in stocks?

Volume is simply how many shares traded in a day. It sounds mundane — but it's the closest thing charts have to a lie detector, because it shows how many people actually put money behind a move.

Price tells you what, volume tells you who cares

A stock jumping 5% on triple its normal volume means thousands of investors participated — genuine demand. The same 5% jump on a quiet day might be a few small trades in a thin market, and can reverse just as casually as it happened.

Where volume matters most

• Breakouts. A move to new highs on surging volume suggests real buyers absorbed the sellers. A breakout on weak volume is suspect — the most common false signal in charting.
• Breakdowns. Heavy volume on a fall through support means holders are genuinely fleeing, not just drifting.
• Trends going quiet. A long rally where volume steadily shrinks is running out of new buyers — often the prelude to a stall.

The honest caveats

Volume spikes around results days and index changes mean little by themselves. And in India especially, compare traded value (price × volume), not just share count — a ₹40,000 stock will never trade the share numbers of a ₹40 stock, yet may move far more money.
